RIESET: the Regional Innovation Ecosystem Self Evaluation Tool
The science behind this RIESET-tool is the regional innovation ecosystems model. A regional innovation system is defined as a group of interacting private and public stakeholders, formal institutions and other organizations that results (partly unconsciously) in the generation, diffusion and use knowledge (Doloreux, 2003).
In the model, the various players in a region and their interactions are described. It also pays attention to the dependence of the (inter)national context of a region. In the adjacent figure, the model is displayed schematically. The model is derived from Autio (1998), and Triple Tödtling (2005) and adapted by Nauta et al (2009).
We have translated the model into twenty variables, based on our research in many regions.
The power of the tool is not the exactness, but to quickly (typically: less than a days work) assess and visualize something as complex as an innovation ecosystem. It’s exactly what you need for a good conversation between stakeholders.
This is the manual for the Regional Innovation Ecosystem Self Evaluation Tool. It was developed by Frans Nauta and Chris Eveleens at Department of Imagination in the Netherlands. Part of the initial research was done at the Innovation research group at HAN University in the Netherlands, where Frans Nauta is professor of Public Sector Innovation. The tool is free for use under the Creative Commons-Attribution-NonCommercial-license (CC BY-NC).
If you use the tool, it would be great if you share your results with us. You can do so at innovatie@nauta.org. Furthermore, if you have any suggestions, comments or other feedback please let us know. It will help us to improve the tool.
